A group of 61 students and 6 staff set off from Belfast early on Saturday 21st February for what was to be a fabulous, thrilling and according to many students -“the best trip ever!”
The early start saw students arrive at Belfast International Airport at 6:30am, a little bleary-eyed but full of excitement for the adventure ahead. I even decided to stay true to form, and wear shorts despite the fact that we were heading for sub-zero temperatures! After everyone had checked in and said their bon voyages, the
ski party began the journey to the resort.
The commute to the ski resort certainly tested the patience of our travellers. What should have been a two-and-a-half-hour journey turned into a nearly six-hour trip. Thankfully, a quick pit stop at McDonald’s en route lifted everyone’s spirits and helped keep energy levels up for the final stretch. On arrival at the hotel, it was time to check into rooms, grab a quick bite to eat, and then head straight to the ski fitting session. Students collected their skis, poles and boots and carefully stored them away, ready for their first day on the slopes. Our resort representatives informed us that we had arrived for what they described as the best week of the ski season - clear blue skies, great snow conditions and plenty of sunshine. Sun cream at the ready!
Each morning began with a hearty breakfast to fuel everyone for a full day of skiing. Students took part in two lesson sessions each day, two in the morning and two in the afternoon - with a welcome ski back to the hotel for lunch to refuel. After lessons, there was also the opportunity to free ski with staff, allowing everyone to put their newly learned skills into practice.
The excitement didn’t end when the lifts closed. Everyone looked forward to the evening apres-ski activities, which included a town trail treasure hunt, a high-speed mountain roller coaster, inter-house bum boarding and a quiz night. One of the highlights of the week was the thrilling Roc ’n’ Bob toboggan run, which saw plenty of carnage but even more laughter all the way down the mountain. One particularly memorable moment involved Mr Corcos’ attempts to master the ski chairlift. On several occasions the lift had to be stopped to allow him extra time to disembark. Mr Corcos insists he was simply “taking in the view” and got distracted!
Throughout the trip, all students were a credit to the school. Their behaviour,
attitude and manners were exemplary, both on and off the slopes. Staff were
extremely proud of how everyone embraced the experience, supported one
another and made the most of every opportunity. The week flew by, and by
the time it was over, many students were already asking when the next ski
trip will be announced!
