The Rockport Round Square delegation has returned from what was a once-in-a-lifetime trip to this year's international conference in Sydney, Australia. Hosted by Barker College, RSIC 2026 was a busy and inspiring experience during which our pupils heard from an impressive range of guest speakers, including Sir Peter Cosgrove, former Governor-General of Australia; Benson Saulo, Australia’s Consul-General; Lisa Sthalekar, former international cricketer and commentator and Samantha Gash, extreme adventure athlete.

Each speaker connected their experiences to this year’s conference theme, “Visions of the Future from an Ancient Land.”

Their presentations explored leadership, service, teamwork and compassion across public life, military service and elite sport. Two key messages particularly resonated with the delegation:

“Change is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice.”

“Learn before you are ready, and then hold the door open for those who come behind.”

Inspired by these messages about leadership and service, the delegation spent time supporting Anglicare, a charity working with individuals and families experiencing hardship. Collectively, pupils contributed more than 3,000 hours of service, sorting donated clothing for resale and fundraising. During this remarkable community-service project, 10 tonnes of clothing were diverted from landfill, while pupils also developed a greater understanding of the environmental impact of fast fashion. The delegation also visited Hornsby Park Quarry, where pupils learned about the ongoing environmental regeneration work transforming the former quarry and returning the site to nature. The visit provided an opportunity to consider how places can be restored and repurposed for future generations.

Adventure has also been a major feature of both our pre-conference and conference experience. Highlights have included climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and taking part in an Urban Adventure Challenge, navigating Sydney using a range of surface transport.

A particularly memorable experience was our special Rockport expedition to Zambi Wildlife Foundation, where we had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to feed a leopard, lions, tigers, marmosets, red pandas and several other species. Zambi Wildlife Foundation is not-for-profit organization it relies on corporate sponsorship and volunteer service, a perfect setting to demonstrate ethical business practice and ongoing service to our Rockport students. These animals are enjoying a peaceful retirement thanks to Donna, her dedicated staff and volunteers, who have created a truly remarkable sanctuary for these magnificent creatures.

From inspiring leadership lessons and meaningful community service to environmental regeneration, cultural experiences and adventure, RSIC 2026 has provided the Rockport delegation with experiences that will stay with them long after they return home.

Thank you to the pupils, staff and parent body at Barker College.
