Rockport Golf Academy Celebrates Success

The Rockport School Golf Academy, led by PGA Pro Debbie Hanna, has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2018; with graduates securing full golf scholarships to American universities, pupils representing their country in numerous competitions; and many trophies and accolades making their way back to Rockport School.

Most recently Golf Ireland visited the school to present medals for the Ulster Senior Schools Scratch Championship. Fin Eager won the Individual Championship, with Harry O'Hara finishing in the Runner Up position. The Rockport School team made up of Fin Eager, Harry O’Hara, Matthew Magee and Caitlin Ross also won the Team Championship. The incredible performance from the entire Rockport contingent was demonstrative of the current talent within the Rockport Golf Academy.

Not to be outdone, the younger members of our Golf Academy have also celebrated recent success, with Benji Botham winning his age category at The Paul McGinley Junior Cup at Quinta do Lago in Portugal; and his younger brother Harley finishing in 4th.

Old Rockportian Molly O’Hara, who secured a full golf scholarship to South Dakota University on completion of her A Levels at Rockport School, was recently the subject of a TV feature highlighting her successes in the sport. Similarly, her younger brother Harry O'Hara was dubbed the future Rory McIlroy in a separate TV feature. Furthermore, Harry was selected to represent Ireland at the Boys International Matches this year, on the back of two very successful Provincial championships.

Currently, we have two Old Rockportians undertaking college degrees on full golf scholarships in America - Delfin Filiz, who is studying in Tusculum University, and Molly O'Hara who is in South Dakota University. Fin Eager will be the next Rockportian to graduate and head to the States on a golf scholarship - he is set to join DePaul University, Chicago in the fall.

With access to 5 beautiful golf courses at the doorstep of Rockport School, including Royal Belfast Golf Club and Holywood Golf Club where Rory McIlroy played as a junior member, it is no wonder that the Rockport Golf Academy is producing such talent. We have no doubt that a number of our current Elite Squad members will be hot on the heels of these talented golfers, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for them.
