Gardening
As part of the gardening club, the children each year set up a vegetable garden as well as renewing the tubs at the front of the school. This ties in with the North Down Tidy Schools competition as we try to improve our surroundings and use the waste materials in our composting system, using the compost as a soil improver.
The compost heap is also used as a tool in Primary Science showing biodegradation. It gives the children a good knowledge of the requirements needed by a wide variety of plants as well as seeing the plants develop over time giving them a sense of achievement at the end of term. The final enjoyable task is to eat our produce.
